When my friends and I were growing up there was always an old abandoned house on the corner of Maple Avenue and Oak Street. My friends and I would dare each other to go near it or to go inside it. Besides the house was always full of scary-looking people, holding clubs and statues of demons. We would all go running home screaming. I think at one point the house burned down. Our parents made us go to bed but we would still hear people walking around upstairs on the second floor. As a young child I have no real knowledge of what these people were doing in this abandoned house on Maple Avenue. This is a fictional story about a boy named Michael, who finds out that his new neighbor, Mr. Westling has a wolf named Horacio that he keeps chained up in his basement where he also keeps some dead animals and some old machines from World War II. Michael comes across the wolf one night when he sneaks into Mr. Westling's backyard. In a fit of curiosity, Michael tries to sneak up to the dog and pet him but is caught by the wolf who sits on top of him and growls. As Michael screams for help from his parents, Mr. Westling comes running outside in his underwear and runs back inside the house when he realizes that Michael has been hurt by the wolf. Michael is taken to a vet who informs him that he has been bitten deep in his left thigh by a rabid dog with rabies which will most likely result in his death unless he receives treatment that might include blood transfusions or shots of tetanus toxoid. Michael's parents feel that it would be best for Michael to stay at home and receive treatment since he is too young to leave the house on his own. Meanwhile there are rumors that Mr. Westling has been having an affair with his wife, which is later confirmed by Michael's father after he discovers a forged love letter from Mr. Westling to Mrs. Westling in the family study. Michael goes to live with his grandparents, who live in a small house on the outskirts of the city where they keep a number of stray dogs that they have rescued from abusive owners or dog catchers who do not want to pay taxes on their dogs. Michael's grandparents are poor so they have no money to pay for the doctor bills, but are able to borrow some money from their friends to save Michael. Unfortunately, Michael later dies on the day that he is scheduled to go back home. Download this work of fiction here: http://www.openebooks. cfa1e77820
