As a word which is used both in literary and general expression, the source of the word "block" is not completely certain. The linguists believe that writer's block derives from various uses of "to block". Blocks are different than blank pages or empty spaces in writing, but were most likely created with the same intention of stopping the writer from proceeding to the next section. The Dictionary of Literary Terms describes Block as "a problem in composition; stuttering; difficulty of progress; stoppage." It is also used as a noun, describing writers who cannot write their work, or writers who cannot finish their stories. This second use is how it relates most to our discussion, as the writers cannot continue after writer's block occurs. The concept of writer's block was discovered in the late 19th century by psychologists who were treating patients for mental illnesses, and found that they would struggle with writing tasks. Once they recognized this pattern, they started to study it. The first widely studied writer with writer's block was Henry James, who suffered from the condition for many years after his father died and he took on his father's business of running a magazine and publishing house. After his death, he did not write for several years until one day when walking along a street in London and having a revelation about what his writing should be about. With this story, the idea of writer's block was established. Soon after, many other writers suffered from the same problems. The concept was then studied by psychologists to investigate how it came about, and led to the development of modern research in this area. One of these researchers was Janet Case (1917–2007), who wrote several books on writer's block and contributed many ideas about what causes it to occur. She believed that writer's block is always connected with negative emotions in the moment when writing the story; in other words, when an individual writes a story, they are connected with someone else (possibly their mother). The writer will then experience some sort of internal conflict that makes the writing process impossible to continue. Modern research has found many causes for writer's block. The first is the internal conflict between the artist's true nature and the judgment of society. Writer's block can also occur because of external pressures, such as expectations to produce commercialized art or difficulty obtaining adequate resources for writing. Case believed that these two causes are directly related, but both come from an individual’s fear, which may be due to many reasons, including fear of success or abandonment. Usually when people believe they are not appreciated for doing something that they truly enjoy, they may experience anxiety while creating new works in that area. cfa1e77820
